Crop4Sight

Potato crop yield management app and portal for growers and agronomists

Produce Investments group firm Greenvale AP, wished to develop a technology-based solution to help potato growers improve crop management and marketing decisions right through the supply chain.

The challenge

Many growers will start the season with a planned potato tonnage from each field, but environmental factors have the potential to throw those plans into disarray. The challenge was to provide an easy and robust method of recording key crop data in the field where mobile reception was poor or non-existent, to synchronise the data with a central data repository and to provide a permissions-driven web-based portal where intuitive trend insights and crop insights could be made available to users.

The app and portal solution

The Crop4Sight app’s first key feature improves understanding of how crop development will impact on marketable yield. App users enter observational data on crop emergence and canopy development and the system calculates yield potential and absorbed radiation. Efficiency/accuracy of yield sampling is increased when combined with Bluetooth scales specific for use with the Crop4Sight app.

The web-based portal combines user-supplied data from the app, variety-based reference data and environmental and crop modelling information obtained in real-time from 3rd parties such as NIAB-CUF and NASA . The information obtained is presented in graphical and tabular form based on the current user’s permissions profile. In this way, growers, processors and enterprises can view information tailored to their specific needs.

The combined power of the Crop4Sight app and web portals provides benefits that extend throughout the supply chain allowing packers and processors such as Greenvale to monitor the likely supply volumes of specific varieties within their portfolio. This allows them to react to a shortfall or oversupply of a particular line and manage the expectations of retailer or processor customers accordingly.

The results

The partnership of the Crop4Sight mobile app and web portal is now being actively used on a subscription basis with fully integrated online registration and purchasing of field licenses and NIAB-CUF crop modelling credits.

Greenvale’s research manager Robert Allen says the pay-for app – which is available on iOS and Android operating systems- key benefits are:

  • It is designed to require minimal data input from growers or agronomists, placing less burden at a busy time.
  • Capability of working offline removes the frustrations involved in working in conditions where network coverage is patchy.
  • Allow packers and processors such as Greenvale to monitor the likely supply volumes of specific varieties within their portfolio. This allows them to react to a shortfall or oversupply of a particular line and manage the expectations of retailer or processor customers accordingly.
